Latest polls - go figure!
Newsweek shows Bush ahead by five points. Time shows it dead even. The electoral vote predictor - http://www.electoral-vote.com/index.html - today shows things very close, though it has been showing Bush way ahead most of the week. The polls are confusing at best - deporessing at worst. But on balance I have a sinking feeling that the Republicans have managed to pull a coup in the spin game on the last debate.
What they have done is made it so that the one thing Americans will remember about that debate is that John Kerry brought up the fact that Dick Cheney has a lesbian daughter. And most people consider that alow blow. Despite the fact that Cheney has mentioned it himself - and despite the fact that Cheney thanked John Edwards during a debate when Edwards raised the same point - the Cheney's managed to look convincgly offended when Kerry mentioned the same thing.
And most people agree - he should not have mentioned it. I don't think he should have mentioned it - but only because of the political sensitivities. I don't know what the real offense was here, unless the Cheney's are simply ashamed of their daughter - and that is offensive.
But the bottom line is this: Mentioning this was a gift to the Republicans. With all the problems that face this country, it is a non-issue. But it's obviously a hot-button issue and on such stupid little things, the fate of an election (and of a nation) can turn. All logic says George W. Bush is the worst president in the history of this nation, and yet he may get elected and have a chance to really ruin US and the world.
