This column by Nichalas D. Kristof shows that Afghan women are far from free today, though you will hear the opposite from President Bush and the toady media - for the most part - simply fail to check. Kristoff checked and found the truth was far different from what the president would have us believe.
The abuse of women is deep in this culture. It can be overcome. But not by the half-baked effort we've put forth. Our fixation with Iraq left Afghanistan swinging in the wind and it's an ill wind.
