Hiiding the failure of charter shcools
The New York Times > Education > Nation's Charter Schools Lagging Behind, U.S. Test Scores Reveal
There are two huge elements to this story:
1 - Kids in charter schools - schools where private companies have taken over the public school mission - are doing WORSE than their counterparts in public schools.
2 - This failure had to be mined out of data released without comment by the US Deptartment of Education. In other words, this administration, which promotes Charter schools, didn't want anyone looking the truth in the eye.
A key paragraph:
Because charter schools are concentrated in cities, often in poor neighborhoods, the researchers also compared urban charters to traditional schools in cities. They looked at low-income children in both settings, and broke down the results by race and ethnicity as well. In virtually all instances, the charter students did worse than their counterparts in regular public schools.
