Is Jeb Bush an idiot too?
First we have Krugman's column raising serious issue with electronic voting machines in general and with Florida practices in particular - not the practices in 2000, but the practices NOW. (See: Fear of Fraud.)
Then on today's NYT home page we have story of how officials in Dade County lost the records of the most recent election using electronic machines. Why did they lose them? Because they ignored the most fundamental rule of computing - they did not make a back-up!
So we now have untrained workers in Florida turning machines on and off, polls opening late because the machines aren't booting quickly, people continuing to deprive other people of the right to vote - just when might a governor get a bit nervous about such things and pull out all the stops for the state election commission to get its act together? What kind of idiot - given the debacle of 2000 - has allowed this situation to evolve?
"You know something, we are gonna win Florida (cut to Jeb smiling), mark my words. You can write it down." - Bush, in a scene from Fahrenheit 9/11
Or in the case of 2004, they'll win by not writing it down.
