Has the Bush Administration Created a New American Empire or Weakened the Old One?
Josh Marshall, author of the blog Talking Points Memo, has just published (26 Jan 04) a sprawling (in time as well as in geography) but thoughtful essay in New Yorker arguing that the neocons and their ilk have misunderstood the source of American power in the world. It was not the imposition of military might as much as the consensual acceptance of the legitimacy of American hegemony which made the US an international colossus.
