George Bush Bails Out
Opening with the line "George Bush is selling out Iraq" Rick Perlstein presents a scenario for the Bush 2004 election campaign that includes this pungent observation:
Once again, as so often in these last few months, an analogy is Vietnam. And, as so often in the last three years, the analogous president is Nixon.
Perlstein presents a concise summary of the Nixon policy in Vietnam, including behind the scenes perfidy by Kissinger that looks like what we are seeing today, albeit in fast-forward. (I am bemused by the notion that Iraq is "Vietnam on crack".) What remains to unfold is whether the American electorate can see Bush for what he is in time to avoid his election.
