Foreign Policy Association Poll Results

Foreign Policy Association - Global Views

Bound into your Great Decisions 2003 Briefing Book are polls which people who worked through it earlier in the year returned. This site gives the results of the surveys which were returned, accepted, and tallied. (We began this group after the deadline for submission so there is no way we could have been included.)

What is your sense of these results in comparison with ours?

It was interesting, though not surprising, to see that the national poll results closely echoed the opinions of our class. US multilateralism was overwnelmingly supported. It was also thought that we should continue to help Afghanistan and leave the troops there until some measure of success is observed. The majority felt we should pressure the Saudi's to root out terrorists and continue to support Saudi reforms. We ought to require American oil companies to pay for environmental damage done in Nigeria. We should not continue farm subsidies and tariffs on imported agricultural products. It was agreed that we should seek engagement with China but still maintain security commitments with Taiwan; in fact, the US should encourage reunification of Taiwan and China and definitely not encourage Taiwan independence. Almost everyone thought that Washington should ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. And finally it was stated that a preemptive policy frightens the whole world.
