Remembering Hurricane Carol:
Your views
Your view?
Did you witness Hurricane Carol in 1954? Tell me about it! And if you have a picture you're willing to share, that's all the better. I'd love to hear from you and I'll add what you have to say to our "Your View" pages. What's more, Charles Orloff is doing a commemorative book on Carol for Blue Hill Observatory and would love to hear from you as well. So if you have something to share, please:

Send me email, Greg Stone

Or send email to Charles Orloff at Blue Hill Observatory.

Or send a single email to us both at once.

Had to write after seeing your Website about the hurricane. I was just shy of 10 years old, living in Warwick (Governor Francis Farms). Lost electricity for about a week.

My dad had recently opened a submarine sandwich shop, Lago's, on Narraganset Blvd. in Cranston. Since both heating and refrigeration was gas fired, he was able to keep food fresh and cook....greatly increasing his patronage during that time. He set several kerosene lanterns in the store windows near twilight. Spaghetti with meatballs were purchased in great quantity that week.

My parents remembered the 1938 hurricane. One of my Mom's cousins was washed off the road and perished. I think he was driving on a small strip of land that crossed a river on the "Eastside".

As we've seen in recent times... that force of nature is extremely destructive. We don't get them here in San Diego, but the wildfires we can get every Fall season are devastating.

Not sure what brought Hurricane Carol to mind here at work, but glad to find your site.

All the best from a fellow ex-Rhode Islander....
