Remembering Hurricane Carol:
Your views
Your view?
Did you witness Hurricane Carol in 1954? Tell me about it! And if you have a picture you're willing to share, that's all the better. I'd love to hear from you and I'll add what you have to say to our "Your View" pages. What's more, Charles Orloff is doing a commemorative book on Carol for Blue Hill Observatory and would love to hear from you as well. So if you have something to share, please:

Send me email, Greg Stone

Or send email to Charles Orloff at Blue Hill Observatory.

Or send a single email to us both at once.

Edgewood, RI

I was 10 years old when Carol came plowing through Rhode Island. I remember watching out the living room window and wondering if it would ever be over.

When it finally ended, I walked outside and started to explore. We lived at 227 Armington Street in Edgewood at the time and were only a few blocks from Naragansett Bay and the yacht club at the end of our street. I remember trees down all over and having to pick my way through branches. I don't remember any downed power lines but that doesn't mean there weren't any.

The yacht club was destroyed and most of the boats were upended and stuck like upright columns in the water. An impressive sight for a young girl. As I remember, only one person perished and that was a state trooper who was trying to rescue someone. Somewhere, we have a copy of the publication on your website with the red flage and downtown buildings on the cover. The loss of the state trooper is mentioned in it.

I'm sorry to say I have no pictures of the storm to share, only the ones in my memory which I will never forget. I've lived in Southern California since 1959 and only worry about the occasional earthquake now !!
