Remembering Hurricane Carol:

Your view?
Did you witness Hurricane Carol in 1954? Tell me about it! And if you have a picture you're willing to share, that's all the better. I'd love to hear from you and I'll add what you have to say to our "Your View" pages. What's more, Charles Orloff is doing a commemorative book on Carol for Blue Hill Observatory and would love to hear from you as well. So if you have something to share, please:

Send me email, Greg Stone

Or send email to Charles Orloff at Blue Hill Observatory.

Or send a single email to us both at once.

Newport, RI

I remember being in Newport the end of August, 1954. I was babysitting for a family in CT. who had a summer place in Newport. At that time I was but 15 years old. The two memories are as follows:

(1) When the terrible blowing and flying objects were at an end, no one had electricity,
however; the neighbors next door invited as many folks as could come to eat in their
garage because they had a pot belly stove. They cooked hot dogs and beans. The
neighbors were the Johnson's, parents of Van Johnson, the actor.

(2) The next day, it was so still outside. The sky was blue, no wind..trees and wires
down all over, but VERY still. It has remained with me these many years how the after
math of such a storm is so serene.

I have been back to Newport many times since; however, the August of 1954 will stay in
my memory banks for ever.
