Remembering Hurricane Carol:
Your views
Your view?
Did you witness Hurricane Carol in 1954? Tell me about it! And if you have a picture you're willing to share, that's all the better. I'd love to hear from you and I'll add what you have to say to our "Your View" pages. What's more, Charles Orloff is doing a commemorative book on Carol for Blue Hill Observatory and would love to hear from you as well. So if you have something to share, please:

Send me email, Greg Stone

Or send email to Charles Orloff at Blue Hill Observatory.

Or send a single email to us both at once.

Block Island, RI

Hello Mr. Stone,

My name is Jayne Saccoccia and I am looking to find some information on news articles that were written pertaining to my father, Robert A. Gillespie. You see, he was the telephone man on Block Island, RI during the hurricane and was awarded the Vail Medal of Honor from the phone company for saving the lives of a family that was stranded during that storm. My parents are no longer around and I have been unable to locate any information. I believe that there were articles written in Time Magazine and National Geographic, but I could be wrong.

If you could provide me with any information or any way I might be able to obtain information, please let me know. I just don't know where to start. Back then, the phone company was referred to as Ma Bell and I don't know if they would archive any information from that time.

Thank you so much for any help you could provide me,

Note: I could find nothing of thisin my limited resources, but perhaps someone else does. If you know anythingbaout this event, please contactme (gstone@umassd.edu) and I'll forward your information to Jane.
