Remembering Hurricane Carol:
Your views
Your view?
Did you witness Hurricane Carol in 1954? Tell me about it! And if you have a picture you're willing to share, that's all the better. I'd love to hear from you and I'll add what you have to say to our "Your View" pages. What's more, Charles Orloff is doing a commemorative book on Carol for Blue Hill Observatory and would love to hear from you as well. So if you have something to share, please:

Send me email, Greg Stone

Or send email to Charles Orloff at Blue Hill Observatory.

Or send a single email to us both at once.

At sea aboard USS Fred T. Berry DDE-858

Hi Greg;

I was just looking at some of the photos you have on the internet. I was in
the Navy, a radioman, on a tin-can (USS Fred T. Berry DDE-858) out of
Newport, RI.

I experienced Hurricane Carol from a different perspective,
that of a sailor on a ship, at sea, right in the middle of it. The eye of
that storm actually passed right over us, as did a lot of water. I recall
thinking to myself in the height of the storm, "Paul, if you survive this,
you might not believe it at some long after point in time, but, the height
of these waves are the height of three telephone poles, one atop the other.

Well, we made it, but I can recall, as we approached Block Island and the
coast of Rhode Island there appeared to be a lot of cottages heading out to
sea.

Thanks for sharing the photos. When you were 13, I was 20. Hope this note
finds you well. I am 74 now and I think I will head over to Home Depot and
pick up some necessities should another big one hit us. We are way overdue.
