Remembering Hurricane Carol:

Your view?
Did you witness Hurricane Carol in 1954? Tell me about it! And if you have a picture you're willing to share, that's all the better. I'd love to hear from you and I'll add what you have to say to our "Your View" pages. What's more, Charles Orloff is doing a commemorative book on Carol for Blue Hill Observatory and would love to hear from you as well. So if you have something to share, please:

Send me email, Greg Stone

Or send email to Charles Orloff at Blue Hill Observatory.

Or send a single email to us both at once.

HI Greg,  I've been meaning to write to you some time back when I first came across your Site - great photos by the way.  Your photos bring back some interesting memories for me as a boy of 7 years old living in Bristol, on Wood Street, near the park and 2 schools.  I remember when the storm hit and felt confused. You see my parents would never really talk about the storm and what it could do. However I was smart enough to know it wasn't just a wind storm, that it should be something to be concerned about.

My memory of the storm was that I was kneeling on the parlor floor facing the window and never moved from that spot until it was over.  The reason I never moved from the window was that I kept looking at a very tall chimney, must have been 100 feet tall or more, that was attached to a factory building just across the street from us. The wind was blowing from left to right across my view of the smoke stack and I kept wondering which way it was going to fall. I guess I felt relatively safe because I felt that since the wind was blowing across and not directly at our building, the chimney would wind up falling the other way.  I also was thinking that,  as long as I kept my eye on the chimney we would be safe. lol

When the storm was over,  the policemen and  the firemen would drive along and speaking through their outside speakers inform everyone of the condition of the storm and that trucks would be by with water and ice.   Meanwhile my older brother and I left the house to check out the damage to the homes and trees. Needless to say the town was a mess - floods every where, trees ripped from the ground and resting on houses and cars. The most interesting thing was  seeing all the boats that had been blown on to the streets, toppled over and crushed by the impact.

The strange part about all of that was my brother and I never felt any fear or felt threaten by the force of the hurricane and the damaged that it caused.  I remember my dad saying it was the worst hurricane since 1938. He said that the one in 1938 was the worst of the two, so I felt somewhat relieved I suppose for that bit of information.

I had been through a few others since then, just before we moved to California and now its about the "Earth Quakes"  However, I would rather deal with the Hurricanes and Tornado's.

I wish I had some photos to share with you, all I have are the memories of a very strange day for me, the day Hurricane Carol came to Bristol, RI

Just a quick note about me, I was born in Fall River, Ma  July 22, 1947, moved to Somerset for 2 years, then moved to California in October 1961.  Presently, I live in Newport Beach and work for a Porsche, Bentley and Audi Dealership as the Finance Manager since 1993. I have 2 daughters, 1 son and 5 grand children already, how did that happen? How did I get this old so fast?? lol

Hope all is well with you and your family and that you won't have to experience any more of these Hurricanes or Tornado's.

Be Safe and thanks for sharing your great site,

Rick Morrow
