Remembering Hurricane Carol:
Your views
Your view?
Did you witness Hurricane Carol in 1954? Tell me about it! And if you have a picture you're willing to share, that's all the better. I'd love to hear from you and I'll add what you have to say to our "Your View" pages. What's more, Charles Orloff is doing a commemorative book on Carol for Blue Hill Observatory and would love to hear from you as well. So if you have something to share, please:

Send me email, Greg Stone

Or send email to Charles Orloff at Blue Hill Observatory.

Or send a single email to us both at once.

Flanders, Long Island, NY

I thoroughly enjoyed your "Carol" site - I was 8 years old, living in Flanders, Long Island, NY, when she hit.  I will always remember that hurricane since it was the only one in which I experienced the amazing power and beauty of the eye and eyewall.  The trees all were leaning one way from the ferocious winds - then suddenly, the  calm "hit".  People began driving around in the calm, surveying damage.  I am not sure how long the calm lasted, but I DO remember looking across a field to the treeline, and seeing the darkness of what I later found out was the back eyewall, and seeing the trees bent suddenly the other way, and some coming out of the ground from the weakening of the roots from when the wind battered the trees the other way earlier.

I was scared and exilarated at the same time, and when a little older would drive to the Hampton beaches until the Coast Guard would make me leave, for other storms that were near misses.

Thanks for the memories- what a neat thing to do on your part - taking the pics and also making this site.
