Remembering Hurricane Carol:
Your views
Your view?
Did you witness Hurricane Carol in 1954? Tell me about it! And if you have a picture you're willing to share, that's all the better. I'd love to hear from you and I'll add what you have to say to our "Your View" pages. What's more, Charles Orloff is doing a commemorative book on Carol for Blue Hill Observatory and would love to hear from you as well. So if you have something to share, please:

Send me email, Greg Stone

Or send email to Charles Orloff at Blue Hill Observatory.

Or send a single email to us both at once.

Just encountered your web site on the Hurricane -- that was a watershed year for an 8 year old.   My family was rescued by boat from our waterfront beach house on Poplar Point in Wickford.

Five houses on that waterfront just down from the light house were destroyed by that storm and we were pulled out by boat just before the house was destroyed.   My brother and sister still talk about that rescue.   We have maybe one picture left of the remnants of the house and If I can figure out how to scan it in I may do that.

It was 1956 before we built another house on that site.   I moved to Texas and rebuilt a modified replica on Galveston Island - a typical double dormered cottage so common in the 20's.    My uncle's house next door was destroyed as well as the neighbors on the other side.    In later years I contacted the Providence Journal and local newspapers , but there are virtually no photos of the damage other than family photos.   I have the Journal book that you have pictured on your web site.    Very interesting reading
