Your view?
Did you witness Hurricane Carol in 1954? Tell me about it! And if you have a picture you're willing to share, that's all the better. I'd love to hear from you and I'll add what you have to say to our "Your View" pages. What's more, Charles Orloff is doing a
commemorative book on Carol for Blue Hill Observatory and would love to hear from you as well. So if you have something to share, please:
Send me email, Greg Stone Or send email to Charles Orloff at Blue Hill Observatory. Or send a single email to us both at once.

Barrington, RIWe were staying at a beach house behind the Securos in Barrington. I, like Phyllis Securo, was five years old. My parents made the interesting decision to set off in the middle of the hurricane. The Securos would ride out the hurricane. We would flee. It should be noted that as an ex-naval officer in World War II, Mr. Securo was very experienced at handling weather. My father, a landlubber who served in Egypt during World War II, was not. In fact he told me about his ship board experiences traveling through the Pacific via India to Egypt on a troop ship. He did not want to repeat that experience. Unfortunately, my Dad did not have enough gas to get us to Providence and we searched for a gas station that was still open. Miraculously, we found one. In that era, it also meant that the gas station had someone to pump the gas. What a brave soul that person was - on duty through a hurricane! I have a picture of him in my mind carrying an umbrella At our home on Sixth Street in Providence, we arrived to find the small maple tree in front of our house blown over. That appeared to be the only casualty to Hurricane Carol.
