Remembering Hurricane Carol:
Your views
Your view?
Did you witness Hurricane Carol in 1954? Tell me about it! And if you have a picture you're willing to share, that's all the better. I'd love to hear from you and I'll add what you have to say to our "Your View" pages. What's more, Charles Orloff is doing a commemorative book on Carol for Blue Hill Observatory and would love to hear from you as well. So if you have something to share, please:

Send me email, Greg Stone

Or send email to Charles Orloff at Blue Hill Observatory.

Or send a single email to us both at once.

Brookline, MA

This is an interesting site. Many of us about the same age living in eastern Massachusetts remember the experience of the hurricane in very similar ways. I was five years old, and living in Brookline. The day of the hurricane began as rainy, but local trips seemed ok to do. By lunchtime, when my mother and I were doing errands in Brookline village, the wind could blow a five-year old off his feet. People hurried home.

At about 5:30, the hurricane was hard rain and wild wind. We were eating a spaghetti supper in the kitchen when there was a terrific crash in the house. A huge dead tree limb had come in through my father's study window, wrecking the room. Out went the lights. We brushed teeth and read bedtime stories by candlelight, and lived without power for several days. Then, like others remembered, I remember a clear, sunny day.
