Remembering Hurricane Carol:

Your view?
Did you witness Hurricane Carol in 1954? Tell me about it! And if you have a picture you're willing to share, that's all the better. I'd love to hear from you and I'll add what you have to say to our "Your View" pages. What's more, Charles Orloff is doing a commemorative book on Carol for Blue Hill Observatory and would love to hear from you as well. So if you have something to share, please:

Send me email, Greg Stone

Or send email to Charles Orloff at Blue Hill Observatory.

Or send a single email to us both at once.

Jamie Bennett here. My sister Becky, (Don's age), caught the Projo article and passed it along to me. It sure brought back some memories for me.

I was 10 during during the event and for better or worse, rode out the storm in Rehoboth, MA at a friend's farm. I remember the wind and falling trees. I actually felt a bit cheated that I missed the total destruction of our house on the corner of Mathewson Rd & Ferry LAne. My family and others were all in the 2nd floor of the back addition when the front of the house tore off and fell into it's own cellar. We also lost both cars and our sailboat which had been hauled at Stanleys and ended up on a lawn between the yard and the bridge. Everyone thought that my folks were nuts to then buy the adjoining new house being built on Blount circle. I'm sure glad they did as it allowed me to spend the next 7 years on the river, a truly special place.

I'l let the Rohde boys know of your site as I'm still in touch with Brian who is living in NH. Also, my brother Peter may have some more vivid recollections as he was 15 at the time.

Keep up the good work.

Editor's note: The Bennett's house suffered the most spectacular damage of any I saw in my wanderings - it split right in two. I took a picture of it, of course, but that's among the missing. There is also more about it in Joan Burling Kenoyer's comments.
