Remembering Hurricane Carol:
Your views
Your view?
Did you witness Hurricane Carol in 1954? Tell me about it! And if you have a picture you're willing to share, that's all the better. I'd love to hear from you and I'll add what you have to say to our "Your View" pages. What's more, Charles Orloff is doing a commemorative book on Carol for Blue Hill Observatory and would love to hear from you as well. So if you have something to share, please:

Send me email, Greg Stone

Or send email to Charles Orloff at Blue Hill Observatory.

Or send a single email to us both at once.

Hingham, MA

I was almost 5 Years old. My Mom and Dad had moved into a new home in Hingham on Tower Road. At the time of the hurricane my dad was on a business trip. That left my Mom with myself and my sister 8 years old, and my brother 10 years old.

We lost many trees in our yard. Our 1954 Ford sustained some damage, but was drivable The torrential rains tested our new roof. My Mom and us kids were running around the house with pots and pans. I can remember the eye of the storm and I believe the sun came out. We were without power for 10 days, and bought blocks of ice to keep our food fresh. The Local Power Company said our road was the hardest hit in Hingham.

At night my Mom taught us to knit. The following day after the hurricane, the sun came out. and men were out with chain saws removing trees from the road. My Mom had nerves of steel to withstand that Monster storm.
