Remembering Hurricane Carol:

Your view?
Did you witness Hurricane Carol in 1954? Tell me about it! And if you have a picture you're willing to share, that's all the better. I'd love to hear from you and I'll add what you have to say to our "Your View" pages. What's more, Charles Orloff is doing a commemorative book on Carol for Blue Hill Observatory and would love to hear from you as well. So if you have something to share, please:

Send me email, Greg Stone

Or send email to Charles Orloff at Blue Hill Observatory.

Or send a single email to us both at once.

Hello Greg

How nice it just was to read your story about Hurricane Carol. I live here in Central Florida now & we were discussing Hurricane Carol as Hurricane Charley was hitting us on Aug 13th this year.

In 1954 I was fifteen & living in the Manton Projects on Manton Ave, Providence (they were new & nice then). I recall going out in it to tie up some small new trees to fences, so they wouldn't blow away. Behind the projects there was a creek, so as teenagers would do, we went down there to play. Our next stop was downtown Providence, I remember all the broken windows in the Outlet company & the mannequins spread out on the sidewalk from the broken windows.

Shortly after Hurricane Carol we all came down with Infectious Hepatitis (10 children & my mom) & they thought the cause was Hurricane Carol & all that dirty water from the Providence river. We all spent five weeks in Charles Chapin Hospital to overcome it.

Our neighbors also caught it as we all played together. Now I sit here waiting for Hurricane Frances & have memories of Carol. O How I hope Frances behaves herself & stays out to sea as I'm to old to chase hurricanes now, Ha-ha.

Thanks for the memory, Best Wishes, Claire Kennedy Furtado

Editor's note: I heard more from Claire just as Hurricane Frances was hitting her section of Florida and she was contemplating going to a shelter.
