Remembering Hurricane Carol:

Your view?
Did you witness Hurricane Carol in 1954? Tell me about it! And if you have a picture you're willing to share, that's all the better. I'd love to hear from you and I'll add what you have to say to our "Your View" pages. What's more, Charles Orloff is doing a commemorative book on Carol for Blue Hill Observatory and would love to hear from you as well. So if you have something to share, please:

Send me email, Greg Stone

Or send email to Charles Orloff at Blue Hill Observatory.

Or send a single email to us both at once.

South Providence & Conimicut, RI

Just saw your website on Carol.

I was only 3 (3 1/2 actually), but I remember it like it was yesterday. We lived in South Providence on Elmwood Ave, and my father owned a Gob Shop on North Main St. Lucky for him he sold cots and lanterns because he was stuck there for the whole storm.

My mother and I rode it out at home with candles and no TV (horrors)! I remember a huge tree fell in our yard. But my most vivid memory, which for some reason no other relative except my cousin (who is 10 years older than me) remembers, is what happened to our house down Conimicut. It was on Grace St. (I believe) and a full block up from the water. We were probably the only house on the block that didn't have any water damage...BUT, a tree fell on a power line that was connected to the second floor of the house and instead of the power line giving way, it stayed with the house and yanked a huge hole out of the second story. Natural A/C!

As I said, no one but myself and my cousin Kenny remembers this happening but we're sure it did. Near as I can tell, Conimicut really never recovered from that storm, having been pounded in the '38 one also.

By the way, I'm writing this from Reston, VA, sitting right in the path of Isabel. We're outside of DC so we're really far inland (no water in my bathtub yet), but the way they're carrying on around here you'd think DC was oceanfront - take it from a Rhody - you gotta experience a hurricane on the water to really appreciate it!
