Brant, spider crabs, and sand

brant gooseWalking Horseneck today we saw a dozen or more brant. At first glance these guys look like Canada geese, but they're smaller and their heads and necks and are mostly black. We saw a large flock - about 150 - over in Colt State Park a few weeks ago. We assume the ones we just saw in the river are migrating and just stopped by for a day or two. I say "river" when we first spotted them they were on the river side of the dunes. Then as we walked back there were five of them playing in the light surf along the ocean beach. [For more information go here.]

Spider crabs seems fairly abundant - well, their remains. The gulls really like them. I suspect they're easy to catch and break. One day last year the beach was littered with hundreds of them. Today we saw about a dozen. [More information and pictures.]

The shifting sand patterns are fascinating. I may try to document this with my camera some time, although I doubt it will show well. Some general patterns are repeated, but the beach seems to vary significantly with storms, tides, and winds, and various unique combination of those three forces.
