The fun is in the clues

Between them, Tom and Don correctly identified the pictures and Don reminded me of cats I had forgotten, except Queer. (He was called that because of his double paws and because some other kid had looked at the litter and said "I don't want that Queer!" That made us love him all the more. But I believe he had died about two years before this picture which was taken in 1963. It was my first year in college in Virginia, in fact, and Dad sent me sad news with a dollar, writing "Have a beer on Queer." (Funny what sticks in your mind!) Bottom line - the cat question was unfair. Sorry. Margaret looked over my shoulder and recognized her - Emily as a kitten. But only Margaret, Sarah, Bren and I would know that.

Onward!

Diary cover

No photographs this week - but a real mystery for many of you. I know the answer, of course, but if the rest of you make like the detectives on that new PBS series where they track down and authenticate family heirlooms and documents, well - I hope you can answer these questions. Correct answers or not, it's your comments that make this interesting.

  • Whose diary is this?
  • Where is the person living?
  • How old is the person?
  • What year is it?
  • What does the person do for a living?

There are clues in the diary entries below - all authentic. As usual, read as few of the clues as possible before making your guess. But after you make your guess, read all the clues. I think diaries are fascinating. We really get a feel from them for how someone lived on a day-to-day basis. Reading these entries made me feel much closer to this person and I suspect we can all see something of ourselves in the person writing the diary. All these entries are from the same year, but I mixed the dates up so they would work better as clues.

As usual, just put your cursor over a date below and a clue should appear in a little cartoon bubble. Be patient. Sometimes it takes a moment or two for this to happen. If the bubble vanishes before you have read it completely, just move your cursor a little and it will appear again.

Well, I have to guess it's Nana's diary written before her marriage to Pop-pops in 1931. I'd guess a few years before, perhaps from 1929. I know she lived with Big Grandmother at some point, but not sure when she moved in. Apparently Pop-pops was away -- I'm not sure where or when he went to college!

The name "Smith" in the diary was my first clue since Nana's mother was Maggie Smith -- though I'm not sure who ME Smith is, maybe a cousin or an aunt/uncle?! I also know little about Nana's Smith grandparents (Gibson and Mary Hildebrand Smith) -- but since Nana's mother was the 6th of 7 chidren and Nana was the last of 6 children and her Smith grandparents both died in 1902, she never knew them.

I believe she was living in Emmitsburg at the time and working as a teacher. If it's 1929, then she was about 24.
