Family history Quiz 2: Who’s this?

Ok - first, we have some unfinished business from last week. I seem to be the only one that finds something wrong with the Baltimore Sun's information. Want to check again? To review it and post your, answer, go here. I'm pretty sure they have it wrong, but then, maybe I don't know my own sister's name. I'm willing to learn. ;-)

Now, for this week we'll try something a little different - that is, our quiz doesn't come from a newspaper, but a family photograph. And the answer comes from the mother of the children shown and I have more confidence in her word than in the Baltimore Sun's. The question is simple. Who is in the photo? Think you know? The answer will be posted on Monday. For now, though, you are encouraged to post your own answers - and any other thoughts you may have about the photo - in the "comments" section at the end of this entry.

Stumped? Here's your first clue. As with last week's quiz, just put your cursor on the words "first clue" below and a clue should appear. Be patient.

First clue.

Still stumped? Here's a second clue.

Second clue.

No lights go on? Well, one more clue. Then on Monday we'll clear up the mystery - if any mystery remains, and add some details about the source.

Third clue.

While I waited over a minute, the clues do not appear (either in Apple's Safari browser or with Explorer)...which means I'm clueless!

But my guess is that this is Jess Stone and his younger brother Owings.

Jess has at least 2 grandsons: Thomas Martin and Edwin Harrison Stone, sons of Edwin Harrison Stone. Tom called me out of the blue in January 2002 looking for a little family history because his wife was pregnant. He had just moved to Atlanta for business school after graduating from a college here in Boston.

He said his father had been told that his grandfather had abandoned the family and didn't want to see them. Truth was that his grandfather was a gambler who sold off the contents of the family home to pay his debts. His wife divorced him with the agreement that he was only to be allowed to see his family if he paid child support -- which apparently he was either unable or unwilling to do.

Tom said that his grandfather had traveled to Texas and remarried. He thinks his grandfather had a family there, but had no details. He did tell me he got a call from a Stone in Minnesota who claimed to be family (though whether this was a 1st cousin or somebody more distant, I don't know).

I believe the younger child is Pop-Pop, looking up admiringly at his big brother, Jesse. I am surprised at how blonde Jesse's hair looks, and it reminds me of my boys' hair ( and other Stone grandchildren's hair as well.)

Hmmm...

Owings knows more about my uncle than I do. I knew about Harrison, but not about Thomas Martin. (If you have email addresses for either of them perhaps they would be interested in some of these pictures. I can add them to the notification list. )

Jess did marry again, in 1938 I believe, and he did move to Texas, but I don't think he had any other children. I met him only one or two times. I know he loved fishing and other outdoor activities - I have more photos with him and fish in them than anyone could possibly want to see. As a child I always saw him as a bigger-than-life character and I was especially impressed that he lived in Texas. But then, I didn't know any of the details of his life and only heard some rough hints that all was not well.

My guess is that it is Jess with little brother Owings. The other information posted was news to me!

It must be Uncle Jess with Dad, but I wouldn't never have related that tall kid to Jess. Jess was a big man and heavy when I knew him. He was a bit "wild" as the Stone family goes. He like the race track, and did lose some money there. He originally went to Med School and maybe even law school, but never graduated. He lived his final years in Fort Worth, Texas and was a long time employee of the Montgomery Ward Company in some type of management position. I believe he was married three times. His son, Harrison, was or is a lawyer outside of Baltimore. I also believe this picture is on the main street of Emmitsburg. When I have time I may look up some other material I have to see if I can add anything more to this story on Jesse Stone.

Greg

Wende's email is Missbooog@aol.com Don't know how she came up with that one, but it has not changed ever that I know of. FYI Gatewood is in Australia for a semester and will be return to Univ of Kentucky for his senior year. Tyler is at U.K. also. The youngest one, Shelby, will be heading off to Austin and the Univ. of Texas next month. Jimmy heads the farm, which is now owned by Sheik Mohammed of Dubai. He and Wende were recently in England for major races.

I'm amazed at how much the older boy looks like Pop-pops to me. Perhaps just my jaded mother's eye, but it looks like a transaction just occured that was not satisfactory to the little boy, and very satisfactory to the older.

LOL, Maggie!

That's a great analysis of what might have happened.

Regarding the street picture of Uncle Jess and Dad.
First: Mom always described Jess as an extremely good looking man with a mustache.
I can recall he and La rouge (sp?) and she was very pretty, visiting us at mathewson road one summer.
Jesse showed up with a fishing rod and was very eager to show me how to use it. He could cast a plug as accurately as one could throw a football only with a lot more distance. Of course i was into sailing so I never took him out in a boat to go fishing . I can say had i really expressed interest at the time in fishing he would have been my "best friend". I do remember him as a fun loving guy. OH! and yes he did have A "potbelly" which reflected his lifestyle and he had a Texas accent and wore a "shoestring" with a clip as a tie. He was a Texan. Mom always spoke highly of Jesse and she often told me I reminded her of him .
:-) IN retrospect i do now understand what she was really saying. :-)

Hello. It is so strange to come across this message board. My dad, Harrison Stone, the lawyer outside Baltimore, told me I could find some interesting things if I typed his full name into Yahoo. Wow! That's my grandfather you all are talking about. My older brother Harrison loves to fish, and we're all a little bit wild, some even have the potbellies from excessive lifestyles. That would be me. All three of us seem to be healthy. Both Harrisons are attorneys in Baltimore while my wife and I live in Atlanta as Owings notes. We lost that child late in the pregnancy unfortunately. Sorry for not sending the video tape I promised. I put it together and never sent it. Karen and I are expecting a baby girl next month, and so is Harrison Jr. and his wife Donna. The ladies are due in the same month, maybe even the same week. Anyway, Mom, whose name I don't see on the board, is Barbara Stone and she is from outside Philadelphia. She is truly the love of my father's life. They have been a great example to my brother and I growing up, and we in turn have married well. Thanks for the picture. I agree with the analysis. Having only one brother, and being the younger of the two, that face on Owings brings back memories of getting the short end of more than one stick. Anyway, wow! Post pictures if you have more. I never met my grandfather Jesse. Reading these posts makes me feel good about him. Thanks.
