Family history Quiz 1: Who’s that?
This is a portion of a picture that appeared in the Baltimore Sun. One of those shown is a Stone. Do you know which one – that is, which individual in the photo and which Stone? Click on the “comments” link at the end of this entry to submit your guess – or your comment, or your recollection of this individual and this occasion. Stumped? Put your cursor in this sentence. Pause. Be patient. With luck you'll get a hint - well, it works for me most of the time ;-) Still stumped? Go here for the complete newspaper item and an answer - sort of. (I say "sort of" because even the Baltimore Sun can make mistakes. But then, maybe I’ve made a mistake?) Your thoughts? Stay tuned. There will be another family history quiz next week, drawing, as this one does, from the archives of W. Owings and Margaret Stone. Posted by Greg Stone at July 5, 2003 09:23 AMComments
Great idea ! What a wonderful way to learn our family history !
I vote for your sister Betty. Sarah is right it's a neat idea. The Family Interloper Posted by: Bradie Metheny at July 6, 2003 09:43 AMIt is Betty to far left at her graduation from Cathedral Kindergarden on University Parkway in Baltimore. Now I will go back for your hint. Posted by: Tom at July 6, 2003 12:00 PMWell Tom's got it exactly right! Tom, can you tell us whether the Baltimore Sun has it correct and whether there's any story connected with this picture? I don't have a clue what "Cathedral Kindergarden" is or was? I thought everyone went to "Park School" when in Baltimore, though I didn't because I was too young. Posted by: Greg Stone at July 6, 2003 12:39 PMHi Everyone. I guessed it was Betty because the age of the girls and the time period seem about right.. and because the picture is all girls and Betty is the only girl of the four Stone children! I could not determine which girl was her though.. Catharen Posted by: Catharen Kann at July 11, 2003 08:36 PMCathedral Kindergarten was where I began my own schooling and I finished it diagonally across the street (University Parkway) at The Johns Hopkins University. Of course the paper had mom's name and not Betty's (which is Elizabeth). There was also some story about either Don or I and Cathedral Kindergarten and how we didn't want Betty to graduate and leave or something like that. I know the three of us all received diplomas from Cathedral, but with Greg coming along later he may have gone to The Park School for kindergarten or maybe we were already in RI. I remember well the move to RI and all of us in the car going through the Holland Tunnel in NY and being concerned with possible car trouble. We moved to RI in 1945 and the first real Sunday we were there we all went to St. Andrews School headmaster's house for Sunday dinner and that was the day they announced the death of FDR while we were there. Posted by: Tom at July 11, 2003 10:06 PMAhhh...thanks. No, I didn't go to Park School or Cathedral. I went to kindergarten after we moved to Barrington. I was three at the time, about to turn four. I might have gotten car sick right after we came out of the Holland Tunnel ont he trip to RI - or maybe that was a later trip. All I remember is it took a lot longer in those days and I was extremely impressed with the Merritt Parkway. It seemed like a fantastic road and even the name had a melodic ring to it. It was the best part of the trip then. I just went to the web to check the spelling - I remembered it as "Merrick" - shades of Don describing his hearing problem with Mom. Anyway, there's a movement to revitalize it and a nice little history with pictures here. Posted by: Greg Stone at July 11, 2003 11:14 PMPost a comment
