Look closely and you can see the gold eye. A beautiful duck, this was one of a pair feeding off Gooseberry Point. Their colors are subtle, but lovely - and, of course, their eyes are distinctive. When I first drove up I didn't notice them and it took binoculars to make a firm ID. The view in the 300mm lens shown here approximates the view in 7x50 binoculars. I'm learning a lot here - and have a lot to learn. In the future I may back off from the auto controls. I don't like some of the choices the camera makes. I think I want to control shutter speed with an eye towards not only stopping action, but getting enough depth of field. That's ajudgment call, of course. And I might try more manual focusing. Bottom line - I need a lot more field experience.
