The challenge was to get close enough for my 55mm "telephoto" - my only lens - to show them well. Well, I got close enough to start to alarm them and not wanting to wreck the scene for others, I grabbed this shot and retreated. Island Rocks - Sachuest - Newport, RI

Hmmm . . . but after I put this up I discovered I had made a mistake that shows what a rooky I am at this digital image business. The picture above was created by taking a copy of my original and reducing it to 500 pixels wide. (Well - actually, I reduced it to 1,000 picels wide (that's the big one you see if you click on the image) and then from that I created the half-sized image above.)

In the picture below I took a copy of the original and at full size, simply cropped it to 1,000-pixels wide. That way the image of the seal is not reduced proportionately, so I take full advantage of the 6.3 million pixels the camera produces. For this page that 1,000 pixel image is then reduced to 500 pixels. To appreciate the difference, click on each picture and look at the larger image in each case. To be truthful, in this case while the close-up impresses me, I think I prefer the composition of the top picture. Take it as one more lesson in Digital 101 - there are so many choices now!
