This is a real "grab" shot. This pair of female mallads had been swimming in a little free water. Then they got up on the ice and I tried to get closer, for I don't have much of a telephoto at this stage. They took off and I got this shot through the trees. I decided the branches added to the image, obscuring just enough for a sense of realism. OK - I probably would have liked them in the clear, but when you break eggs you make an omelet ;-) Cornell Pond, North Dartmouth, MA.
